Impacts to Health and Safety Under Labour Government
In August 2024, the Labour Party made their first steps to their ‘Plan to Make Work Pay’ which aims to modernise the current employment landscape to ensure that British workers have better working conditions.
Whilst there are no current definitive Health and Safety legislation changes, some of the proposed employment law changes could have a knock-on effect on health and safety.
Increased Funding for HSE
Under the new Labour government, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) could receive more funding and resources.
This will help the HSE achieve their 10-year plan, ‘Protecting People and Places’ which focuses on:
- Reducing work-related ill health (specifically concentrating on mental health and stress)
- Increase and maintain trust to ensure that people feel safe where they live and work
- Support industry innovative safety and aid the move towards net zero.
- Maintain Great Britain’s record as one of the safest countries in the world
Impact on Businesses
What would more funding for the Health and Safety Executive mean for businesses?
It could result in an increased number of inspections and stronger enforcement actions which aims to strongly encourage employers to follow the latest safety standards and address violations quickly.
