IPAF Training & Courses

IPAF courses, or Access Equipment training, are designed for people who want to work at height using powered access equipment, also known as MEWPs (Mobile Elevated Working Platforms).

IPAF training is the industry-recognised standard for anyone working at height using Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs), helping ensure safety, compliance, and operational efficiency.

Most of our IPAF training courses will take between 1 and 2 days. You'll be able to access your IPAF certificate after completion using your IPAF ePAL app.

Yes – IPAF training can be delivered on site if suitable equipment and facilities are available. Contact us to discuss your location and setup.

IPAF training still includes a physical PAL Card and certificate. If you'd prefer a digital version, you can download the ePAL app and link your licence at any time.

If you’ve lost your PAL Card, you can request a replacement from our office. A fee applies for replacement cards.

Use the ePAL app to link your PAL Card by creating an IPAF ID account and entering your licence number or scanning the card using NFC. If the details match, your digital card will appear in the app.

Yes – the IPAF Operator course covers the basics of harness use, including pre-use checks, fitting, adjustment, and safe attachment to MEWPs, following IPAF guidance H1.

No – only the operator needs an IPAF licence. Passengers must wear appropriate PPE, but no licence is required.

It's not mandatory, but training is recommended. At minimum, they should be familiar with the MEWP model and rescue procedures to ensure they can operate ground controls safely.

Yes – prior MEWP experience isn’t required. However, it may affect how long the course takes and your chance of passing on the first attempt.

The choice between a harness and life jacket depends on the risk: if there's a higher risk of falling, a harness may be appropriate; if there's a risk of drowning, a life jacket should be worn. A proper risk assessment must be carried out.

If the theory test is failed, the full course must be rebooked. If only the practical test is failed, it can be retaken within 90 days. It’s recommended to review the reasons for failure with the instructor before retaking.

Yes – IPAF is recognised by Build UK and widely accepted across UK construction sites. IPAF qualifications meet the standards set out by Build UK and Construction Skills.

MEWPs are generally safe to use in wind speeds up to 12.5 m/s (28 mph), unless designed for indoor use. Always check the machine’s limits and be cautious in windy conditions or when lifting large panels.

No – standing on the guard rail of a MEWP is unsafe and not permitted. Operators must remain within the platform and follow correct safety procedures.

Exiting a MEWP at height should only be done following a thorough risk assessment that proves it is the safest and most effective method. See IPAF guidance E2 and BS 8460 for official standards.
