IPAF Andy Access: The Safe Use of Lead Acid Batteries
IPAF have released their latest safety guidance around the use of lead acid batteries.
Due to their durability and low cost, these batteries are commonly fitted to mobile elevated work platforms (MEWPs) and regular maintenance.
The Risks
Lead-acid batteries contain electrolyte, which is a mix of sulfuric acid and distilled or deionised water. This substance is corrosive and can cause burns if it touches your skin or eyes. Spills can also damage property and harm the environment.
Additionally, lead-acid batteries produce hydrogen gas, which is highly explosive. If a battery explodes, it can severely damage the battery casing.
During machine pre‑use checks:
- Check the battery electrolyte levels using correct PPE
- Top up the electrolyte levels with distilled or de‑ionised water
- Inspect battery security, leads, terminals and look for corrosion
Whilst charging the battery:
- Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions
- Charge in a well‑ventilated area away from ignition sources
- Keep charging areas tidy and charging leads in good condition
