Rough and Industrial Terrain: What’s the Difference?

A recent update from the UKWA has identified that some companies will use a rough terrain telehandler in an industrial environment, meaning that the full testing criteria of the course cannot be met.

The technical requirements for both types of telehandlers are different. It is important for businesses to understand the difference when organising training for their operatives.

  • Rough terrain: intended for operation on unimproved natural terrain and on the disturbed terrain of, for example, construction sites.
  • Industrial: intended for operation on smooth, level, prepared and consolidated surfaces.

Following recent guidance restrictions will be applied to any training certification where a rough terrain telehandler cannot be tested to its full capacity i.e. Industrial use only.
